For more than a century, Wilshire Country Club has been a staple of the city and, as our first president Marion Gray remarked, “A wonderful asset to Los Angeles.” Founded in 1919, a group of local businessmen partnered with G. Allan Hancock to build a country club and golf course on his abandoned oil field. Hancock provided land shaped by natural plateaus and dry creek beds, and designer Norman Macbeth transformed it into a classic golf links. By December 1919, Wilshire Country Club was open and quickly became a thriving center for both golf and social life.
